Howling, Please Spelling is an essential tool for clear communication. Fourth and fifth graders are expected to give due attention to correct spelling in all their work. The following represents an outline of my spelling expectations. 1. Eliminate careless mistakes - any word that appears on the assignment should be copied carefully and accurately. 2. Learn to use available resources to spell accurately - Class and homework assignments during which dictionaries and textbooks are available should not contain spelling errors. 3. Spell age-appropriate words correctly - There is a level of reading and writing literacy that I expect of fourth and fifth graders. Most prepositions, pronouns, and words that are part of their normal writing vocabulary should be spelled correctly on all work. 4. Make Wise-Choices when spelling new, difficult, or technical terms. Many terms in Bible, history, and science have not yet found themselves into the written vocabulary of students. Not wanting to turn these tests into spelling tests, points are deducted only if the spelling the student chooses violates a phonetic approach or one of the "Wise Choice" rules we have discussed this year. No more than 3 points will be deducted from a quiz or a test for spelling. There is no limit on daily work where resources are available to help with correct spelling. |
