The History of WCCS

The need for a Christian school in West Chester burdened Pastor E. Allen Griffith, Lowell Barr, and Stanley Piotrowski after they observed Elkton Christian School in December 1971. They felt challenged after their visit and knelt at the entrance of the church and prayed for God to provide a Christian school.

Their prayers were answered when, in March 1972, the congregation of Bible Baptist Church voted to start a school with Kindergarten through 3rd Grade. Mr. Bieber, the school administrator, challenged Pastor Griffith and the congregation to go with Pre-K through 11th grade. In July 1972 the doors of West Chester Christian School opened its doors for enrollment. Seventy-two students enrolled the first year, enrollment was doubled by the second year.

One problem the school had to face the first year was that the township would not allow classes to be held in the church. Because of this, grades pre-K through third moved to the West Chester YMCA, while grades 4 through 11 met at Bible Covenant Baptist Church in Media. After three to four months of court proceedings, the township finally agreed to let classes meet on the church property. Satan continued to attack God’s work and by March of the first year Mr. Bieber stepped down as administrator. Pastor Griffith took over the duties of principal for the remainder of the school year. After struggling through the first year, the infant school faced the dilemma of finding a new Minister of Education and additional faculty for the second year. The Lord met this need by supplying a man who was an experienced teacher and charter member of Bible Baptist Church, Leo D’Arcangelo, along with the needed faculty staff.

As the church grew, a multi-purpose building was built in 1975. The original church building was converted to classrooms. It wasn’t until the fall of 1978 that the present auditorium and classrooms were completed and all of WCCS met on the church property.

The greatest blessing at West Chester Christian School is seeing students being trained in a Godly manner and going out to serve the Lord. There are many graduates that have gone on to be preachers, teachers, pastor’s wives, Sunday School teachers, youth leaders, and missionaries. Another blessing is continuing to see children of our graduates as students in the School. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

“This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes” (Psalm 118:23).
